With gratitude…

posted on April 26, 2008 at 8:02 pm

About three years ago, I was living in San Francisco and working as a cook in a little French restaurant. I was determined to make a go of it, but—truth be told—kitchen life was wearing on me. Trudging home in the rain with my knife bag in tow, being too hyper from service to fall asleep at a decent hour before starting the cycle all over again the next day, cooking the same dishes every single night, never being able to completely get the stench of frying oil out of my hair, having no time to myself and even less time for my family and friends. I was just plain exhausted and dissatisfied. I took a long hard look at my life and decided it was time make a choice. I was either going devote myself to becoming an executive chef or hang up my whites. You know which path I chose.

After a month of unsuccessfully looking for another food-related job in San Francisco, the time came for me to make the hard decision to leave the city I loved so much. Money was tight and the market was incredibly saturated. Atlanta was a town I knew well and untapped in so many ways. In two weeks, I was back in the dirty south, surrounding by unpacked boxes, with no clue what my future held for me.

To say I was consumed with food chatter is an understatement. I had no outlet and incessantly waxed on about cooking and restaurants. Out of sheer frustration, a friend said, “Why don’t you start a blog or something?! I can’t listen to you talk about food anymore!” In one hour, “The Blissful Glutton” was born.

When I look back at those first posts, it is like seeing photos of yourself from your awkward stage as a teenager. I had not written a word—save a few press releases—since college and I was shaky to say the least. However, I eventually found a rhythm, a voice and even more amazingly, an audience.

June will mark the 3rd anniversary of this website and I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to my fellow food lovers who have supported me with your readership, kind comments and even those of you who have given me a kick in the ass when I needed it. It has been a delicious three years.

Blissfully yours,
Jennifer

Wow, three years already? Happy Anniversary! I love the personal asides, the photos, and the great food finds you share with your readers. SF’s loss is Atlanta’s gain. Keep up the amazing coverage!

Congrats on the anniversary. Here’s to many more years of the Blissful Glutton! I do enjoy your articles and blog entries. Having lived in NYC, LA and Boston, I miss the action (but Atlanta is getting there!), but find comfort that there is someone out there who is always in search of the perfect dumpling, the most sensational dessert, and spot-on eating experience…
