Udipi Cafe: Atlanta

Royal South Indian Thali
RESTAURANT REVIEW
Given the choice between the new Madras and Udipi Cafe, I prefer Udipi. I really love their thalis and the menu has a great mix of Southern Indian specialties. There is a lunch buffet ($6.95 during the week and $8.95 on weekends), but you can also order off the menu. I chose to order off the menu and grabbed a Royal South Indian Thali ($12.50). The thali comes with aromatic white rice, flaky poori, sambar, dhal, kootu, avial, poriyal, rasam, curd, deliciously sour chunks of pickled lemons, papad and a wonderfully sweet payasam. It was superb and filling without weighing me down.
Another shot of the thali
Being the glutton that I am, I had to have a taste of the coconut rava masal dosai. The dosai are huge and expertly prepared. I really liked the bits of caramelized onion embedded in the crust. The fillings–especially the golden potato and shredded coconut in this one–are always well-seasoned and satisfying. Great spot for lunch and close to Your Dekalb Farmer’s Market so you can kill two birds with one stone. I wish I lived closer!

It’s the chana batura (chickpeas with puffy bread) and the coconut rice that keep me coming back to Udipi!
Love Udipi! I love the very generous portion of coconut chutney served with the dosa..MSB has nothing on Udipi!
The food was greasy and awful, the service sucked. This place is a dump.
