Thumbs Up Diner: Inman Park

RESTAURANT REVIEW:

My previous experiences at Thumb Up were…lackluster. I never really got why people like this place so much. The lines are just ridiculous and the food was not worth the wait. I got convinced to go in the other day and I have to say I was curious. Were my past experiences an anomaly? I ordered the chicken and waffles (pictured above). The food was good but not great. Big menu and lots of choices. Not sure it qualifies for best breakfast in Atlanta though. The waffle batter was kind of bland and the chicken was way undersalted (great crunch to it though). I would go back because I am a breakfast junkie and there are sooooo few quality spots here in town. What do you think about this place? Overrated or worth the hype?

I agree with you. My trips to Thumbs Up have been fun because I love the space itself (it reminds me of diners from my youth) and also because of the great racial mixture with the clientele – very refreshing in a city where there is such an unfortunately pronouced divide between whites and black and other people of color.

But the food is very average and bland. It’s reliably decent, but not up to the standards of some of the better breakfasts I’ve had at places like Radial, Goldberg’s and Highland Bagel. But then I woudl say the same thing about Flying Biscuit – incredibly popular but with unremarkable food.

Sometimes it’s just fun to go out for a traditional breakfast when you’re too tired to cook it yourself.

I agree with darin… Gotta be a Waffle House somewhere around there. Twice the food at half the price.
