Super spirits: Square One Organic Cucumber Vodka

Flavored waters and spirits that mimic fresh fruits and vegetables have never pleased me. Most versions always seem to possess that off-putting processed and downright fake flavor. So, you can imagine I was skeptical when I tasted cucumber vodka for the first time. Truth be told, it didn’t taste 100% like biting into a fresh cucumber. But the cucumber flavor was “fresh” enough to mask the heat of the vodka and lighten its overall mouthfeel. I dug it. Square One makes a great version that retails for around $29.50 (after tax) if you pay cash. I’ve bought it at Green’s on BuHi and Ansley Wine Merchants. You can visit their site to find a retailer near you. Crop Organic Vodka also makes a nice version–I am dying to try their Tomato flavor–that is cheaper, but I have had a harder time finding it around town. Regardless, cucumber vodka is my new favorite freezer item that lends itself to a myriad of drinks and flavorings. Mint, fresh cucumber, lime, lemon, simple syrup…it all works. Moon also noted it would be great in a Bloody Mary. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Shaun’s Restaurant recently inherited Belezza’s mixologist, Brian… and he is using this vodka, muddled with some crushed ice, dry vermouth and fresh cucumber: the cucumber martini, which they are calling the ‘Penny Lane’. Its superb, must try. Maybe during one of their upcoming Sunday Pasta nights.

Full disclosure – I’m the owner of Square One Organic Spirits . . .

When your garden tomatoes come into season later this spring, muddle some of your cherry tomatoes (the orange ones are best) and some basil in a cocktail shaker and then add 2 oz. Square One Cucumber, 1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice and 1/2 oz. agave nectar or simple syrup. Shake and strain into cocktail glass. Its my all-time favorite cocktail with our Cucumber and you’ll find a way to get rid of all those prolific cherry tomatoes from your vines! It rocks. Thanks for the love everybody. We are small and family-owned, so its nice to get the kudos!

    Cheers,
    Allison

P.S. Wait until you try our high-proof floral Botanical spirit coming out in April. Hopefully Brian will have it there too.

would cucumber infused vodka also be called gin?

aka Frank: No, this could not be classified as a gin. In order to legally call something a gin, it would have to have juniper in it. Most gins are also higher proof and distill multiple botanicals with the base neutral spirit to create that complex profile. Square One Cucumber is Square One’s classic organic rye vodka with the added essences of organic cucumber. Its all about the cucumber in this one!
