Sotto Sotto: Inman Park

RESTAURANT REVIEW:
If I had to choose one European cuisine to eat for the rest of my life, it would certainly be Italian. There is something simple yet elegant about the cuisine. It’s focus on preserving the integrity of ingredients and seasonality places it near and dear to my heart.

Atlanta has many Italian restaurants that I love and I am always looking for a new one. Sotto Sotto has consistently won praise from Atlanta critics for their Italian fare. I paid the restaurant my first visit on Monday night. I felt transported to Italy the moment I set foot in the rustic space. We ordered the fava bean and pecorino salad, scallops with cannelli beans and tomato sauce, lasagnette with bechamel and bolognese, and the duck ragout with pappardelle.

The fava bean salad was flavorful, but a bit too crunchy–par-cooking the beans would have made it perfect. My date’s scallop dish was good, but not great. The sauce needed to be cooked a bit longer because it was a bit raw and under-seasoned. The scallop was perfectly cooked though and the hint of smoke made up for the sauce.

My pasta dish was gorgeous. The noodles were cooked the right amount of time and the sauce was surprisingly light. I paired it with an Amarone (my favorite wine) which was hot, but very well-balanced. My friend enjoyed his duck ragout, but I did not get a chance to taste it.

Verdict: I can see this being added to my rotation. I want to try more of their dishes, especially the proteins. The service was exceptional and unobtrusive. The space just felt comfortable and warm. I almost did not want to leave. I would definitely return. Nice spot.

Tsk, tsk. Sotto Sotto should have been much higher on your list of places to try. Ranks as my favorite Italian in Atlanta and one of the best deals for dinner as well. Lasagnette Bolegnese e molto bene.
