Michael Ruhlman Cooking Demo at Viking: 11/9
I had the pleasure of attending the Michael Ruhlman cooking demonstration at the Viking Store in Buckhead last Friday. Michael was in town promoting his new book, The Elements of Cooking. I had never been to one of Viking’s class, so I did not know what to expect. I was pleased to find that my $69.99 got me a tasting menu prepared by Michael, wine, and access to one of the best food writers out there today. A remarkable bargain.

I took some pictures (with his permission) from my seat, which was a bit too far because I got there 5 minutes before the class started. Michael’s aim for the book–I bought a copy and am about to start reading it–is to show people how to cook tasty food without the fear of tackling such items as fresh pasta–a remarkably easy thing to do with a big payoff. Michael even knocked some out during the class.

I can’t post the recipes here–you’ll need to buy the book–but, here are some photos of the food we had that evening.

Arugula and spinach salad with homemade pancetta lardons (he made making the pancetta sound so easy) and a poached egg.

Blanquette de poulet with homemade pasta, roasted shallots, and gremolata (nice touch).

Sugar choux donuts with chocolate sauce and ice cream.

It was an overall fun event and Michael was patient and answered everyone’s questions while leading a class–a difficult feat. He stuck around for a good hour after the event to talk with the audience members individually even though he had to fly to Portland the next day–we were only the second stop on his tour. Good guy and nice way to kick off the weekend. I’ll be keeping my eye on more of the Viking store chef demos. It was worth the time and money.

Oh you got poached egg on your salad? Here in St. Louis, his first class, we got hard-boiled…oh well, still yummers.
