Northern China Eatery: Buford Highway

I went to Northern China Eatery on Moon’s recommendation a while back. While I wasn’t blown over by the food as a whole, the place is definitely a worthy addition to Buford Highway.
The restaurant’s menu is similar to Chef Liu’s, but longer with a large variety of soups and hot pots. I was most intrigued by the pork meatball hot pot. However, my friend wanted to try the wonton soup.

The wonton soup was a major disappointment. It was bland, watery and the wontons tasted (and smelled) like raw flour. I kept wishing we’d gone with the pork meatballs instead.
I am a completely helpless noodle addict. Therefore, I was naturally anxious to try the pork noodles

They were—unfortunately—bland and too soupy for my taste. Steer clear.

The Shanghai Soup Buns, which the chef assured us were freshwere much better than I expected. It has been hard to find good ones around town these days. They had a decent amount of soup in each dumpling, but the skins were not as thin as they could have been. I like mine just thick enough to hold fillings without the unfortunate spillage.

The leek pie was decent, but far from great. The crust was not cooked through and a bit raw. However, the filling was perfectly seasoned and had a nice ratio of fillings.

The pan-fried pork buns were gorgeous. The springy dough is stuffed with juicy pork filling (be careful on first bite) and fried to a golden crisp on the bottom. Absolutely delicious. I would return for these alone.
The Mandarin Pork Pie—thin layers of dough filled with highly seasoned pork filling—was another favorite. It was a nice version, which was comparable to Chef Liu’s
I do plan to go back and try some more dishes since this place has promise and I see another table order new dishes I want to try each time. Many of my friends have gone here since I posted and said they really liked it. However, given the choice, I’d rather hit Ming’s, Chef Liu or Café 101 since they are in such close proximity. But, who can really complain about yet another authentic Chinese option in our dining scene? Certainly not me.

    Wow. I couldn’t disagree more about the Szechwan pickles noodle soup with pork. It is rich, gelatinous, and unctuous–perfect food for these cool mid-winter days. I’ve had it at least a dozen times and it never fails to please.

    Little Szechwan used to have this soup on the menu (they may still have it; I haven’t been there in quite some time). Theirs wasn’t anywhere near the quality of NCE’s offering.

    Do any of the people there speak English? When I went there were two ladies who were quite nice but whose linguistic ability left something to be desired.

    The dumplings I had were pretty good and pretty cheap, worth going back probably.

    We’ve been twice, once for dinner and once for lunch. Dinner was better for some reason…soup dumplings had more liquid, beef noodle soup had good flavor, but oily and boiled pork dumplings were okay. On the second visit, most of the juice was missing from the soup dumplings, beef noodle was good, scallion pancake was okay and the pork pot stickers were partially hollow with a faint lamb taste. They must have ground the pork after lamb. On a positive note, everything is inexpensive. Not sure if we will return.

    I just tried it today based on a review in Atlanta Magazine. It was delicious!
