Nom of the week: Pita Palace

posted on October 26, 2010 at 2:39 pm

I have been going to Pita Palace forever. Before for my folks moved to South Beach a few years back, I’d meet my dad and sister there for a quick lunch once a week. In fact, check out the wall and you’ll see my mouth on the cover of an old issue of Atlanta InTown Paper. Owners have come and gone, but the newest owner (been in place for a while) has made the latest incarnation of this souped up falafel stand my favorite. I’ve been more of a regular again since I moved just around the corner. I especially love the heavily-accented Israeli dude behind the counter who always lets me know what’s the coolest new iPhone app right after he asks me if I want “baba” and “spicy” on my pita. While the bread is awesome, I went breadless and got the falafel plate the other day. You get one plate to fill with salads from the salad bar–I love that fried eggplant and those crunchy ass pickles.

The other plate arrives with super crispy falafel that’s green on the inside from the loads of parsley.

Noms.

Just a tip: the falafel is the thing to get here. The shawarma just doesn’t do it for me unless it is Tuesday and they have the Cornish hen special.

Hands down, the bets falafel in town!

I used to live right around the corner and went every Sunday before retiring home to watch football. LOL (and those pickles! Nom, nom, nom!!) Great call.

Don’t miss the kind of ugly redish brown eggplant stuff in their toppings. It’s like habanero babganouge or somthing. Smoking hot and tasty, they never believe how much I want.

Videos of Israeli soccer on the tv and techno-pop on the stereo- the perfect environment to stuff your pita full of falafel, pickled onions, cabbage, pickels, fried eggplant, tahini, shug, hummus and salad. My favorite Atlanta lunch, no question.

There are many strange foods that you sometimes mention and I will usually try them and will usually like them. However, I draw the line at “ass pickles”. Not sure what they are but they do not sound appetizing. I do think that within a certain demographic you may have unintentionally invented a new slang term.

Went there yesterday. It reminds me of MOAZ in Amsterdam. I really liked it. If you get a chance to hop across the pond to Europe you should try MOAZ their salad toppings are phenomenal.
