Nom of the week: Coconut cake from Wright’s Gourmet Sandwich Shoppe

Wright's: Dunwoody
I blame The Broke Socialite for this new addiction. Sometime last year she was lamenting that she couldn’t stop eating some “most amazing” leftover coconut cake she’d purchased for a get-together. I demanded to know where it was from and she directed me to Wright’s Gourmet Sandwich Shoppe. She sang the cake’s praises and called it “the best” in Atlanta. Coconut cake is my absolute favorite cake and TBS was not lying about it being scrumptious. Wright’s is a little out of the way, but I can assure you this is one destination-worthy slice of cake if coconut is your bag. TBS told me they use coconut milk to make it. The frosting is ethereal and each layer is packed with shredded coconut. Get you some.

A friend of mine who lives in Dunwoody has been serving lasagna and other casseroles from Wright’s when it has been her turn to host our weekly bridge game. They have all been excellent – far beyond what I expect of frozen bought casseroles.

Wrights is awesome! But have you had the Tres Leches at Tierra? Delish! Not exactly a coconut cake, but is is made with coconut milk.

This post just made my day. Judging from their website they’re affiliated with the Wright’s Gourmet in Tampa (I was skeptical until I saw the Beef Martini Sandwich…), which is THE GREATEST.

This is our second stint living in Tampa and for years Wright’s has been wildly popular here. It’s packed for lunch on a daily basis. Their cakes are outrageous and I hear they sell quite a lot of them over the holidays. Their recipe for cream cheese brownies is in an old Tampa Jr. League cookbook I own. I see they are on the bakery menu up there too. I wonder, why Dunwoody? I’ll have to ask the Tampa folks and scarf down some coconut cake while I’m there.

Love your Blissful blog, especially your “Isn’t this what life’s about?” post. Really nice. Your blog has been one of my favorites since I decided to enter the food blog world, but it makes me miss Atlanta.

So Wright’s is kinda a right of passage for Dunwoody youth… everyone works there as a kid at some point. When it comes to what to get… there are 2 standouts IMHO. #1 the rebel rueben and #2 the lemon pound cake (I swear there is something addictive in these damn things)

Discovered Wright’s Gourmet in Tampa in the early 80′s. Ate there so often the owner, Jeff, started running a tab so I only paid every 2 weeks. He knew I was from Atlanta and told me his uncle was opening a similar deli in Dunwoody. That’s where I’ve been eating since 1995 when I moved back to Sandy Springs. The Bahama Baby is my favorite – roast pork, ham, bacon and cucumbers.
