Nibbles: Dan-Dan noodles @ Cafe 101

RESTAURANT REVIEW:
I was dragging my feet the morning after the Fourth and I needed something comforting and spicy to wake my body up. So, I went to Cafe 101 for a bowl of their Dan-Dan noodles. I have been loving these noodles ever since Moonie brought them over one night (the man knows Chinese noodles are the way to my heart). The noodles are thick and chewy doused in a vinegary, spicy sauce with loads of garlic and ginger (?). I also like the vegetable they put in the dish although I cannot place it for the life of me! They are even better the next day. I need to get over here more.

    But are they as good as the Dan Dan Noodles at Rathbun Steak?

    Does it taste like a mustard or turnip green? It looks like what my mom calls “oil vegetable”, or yóu cài.

    Looks good, and I look forward to trying it on my next visit.

    That sounds like them. They’re pretty tasty.

    They have little yellow flowers that grow on them. I saw they had some at the Dekalb Farmer’s Market this past weekend.

    Ya Cai sounds right, I use it when I make Dan Dan Noodles at home. I also use pickled mustard greens. Check out Fuschia Dunlop’s “Land of Plenty”, if you haven’t already. It’s an awesome Szechuan cookbook…

    My husband and I went tonight and really enjoyed the meal. We were headed to our Buford Hwy standby, Little Szechuan, when we spotted Cafe 101. After reading about the Dan-Dan Noodles we turned the car around and headed in! We had the cold Szechuan Vegetables wrapped in tofu skin (much less tough than I am used to), Dan-Dan noodles, and Kung Pao Scallops (smoky and delicious!). We will add this to our Buford Hwy rotation for sure!

    …and for yet another version: I was going to say Yu Choy, which is how I see it labeled at BuHi FarM.
