Joel Restaurant: Buckhead

Joel is one those restaurants I always enjoy but oddly consider when going out for a nice dinner. I had been meaning to get over there for the chef’s weekly menu ($39) for quite some time. I checked the menu and saw they were offering fresh langoustines…a rarity on any menu in the U.S. That sealed the deal. The menu looked great but no langoustines 🙁 Seems that they were no longer offering them that week. However, my eyes quickly turned to the words “fresh porcinis” on my menu. Another rarity on any menu in the U.S. Seems the Chef is importing so pretty good product. Something I appreciate any day. I opted to just order off the regular menu since I am not a big dessert eater. My boyfriend ordered the prix fixe menu. He got the minted pea soup with bacon sorbet, the braised pork cheeks and some yogurt dessert I cannot remember. I ordered the fresh porcinis (of course) and the short rib. The pea soup was a work of art. Lovely flavors. My porcinis were to-die-for. Massive chunks of porcini with these little parsley-filled pastas in a frothy parsley broth. I could have eaten a massive bowl for dinner. The pork cheeks were very good. Properly seasoned and tender. My short rib was just average. Some parts of the meat were dry while others were tender. The sauce was also a bit bitter. It was served with little pieces of gnocchi which were made out of cornmeal. Great service if not a bit out of it (did not know anything about the menu). Will definitely be back soon.
