Funny that Chez Panisse was ranked #1 and even beat French Laundry. Michelin just published their Bay Area guide and French Laundry won 3 stars (no surprise) but Chez Panisse just won one. I haven’t been lucky enough to eat at Panisse but I hear from friends who have over many years that it is somewhat on autopilot, with Jeremiah Tower long gone and Alice Waters focused on her many organic/political causes.

My meals at Chez Panisse and Chez Panisse Cafe were good but not great. I am surprised that they placed so high. They use great ingredients but my meals there have been no better than my meals at Eugene. I do have alot of respect for Alice Waters though.

I see that Portland, OR has two, the same as Atlanta. 2 million v. 5 million. Higgins is overrated, Paley’s is very good. I think the reason for such a small area having 2, is because Oregon grows all kinds of produce and organic meats, etc and it doesn’t travel far.
