Food find: Sparkman’s Cream Valley milk and butter

Massive blocks of butter

When I was a little girl, we used to get our dairy products delivered to our door by a local creamery. One of my favorite things to do was fill out the order form with my mother—yes, I was food obsessed at an early age. The service eventually stopped delivering and we were forced to get our milk and butter at the grocery store. The flavor just wasn’t the same.

Ever since then, I have been searching for a local source for my dairy. In San Francisco, I was smitten with Strauss Family Creamery’s milk and butter (you can find their butter in Atlanta). Finding flavorful local milk—unless I wanted to go the raw milk route—has been a problem since I moved back to Atlanta. But, I have finally found a great alternative that is readily available at many local stores: Sparkman’s Cream Valley.

So, what is the story behind Sparkman’s? It is best explained with this information pulled from their website:

Our No Artificial Hormone Approach*
Sparkman’s Dairy has never used artificial hormones to alter the natural milk cycle of our cows. Now, as Sparkman’s Cream Valley, we continue to take this approach now that we are using our own milk to produce dairy products right here on the farm.

Our All-Jersey Cows

What’s the big fuss about “all-jersey” cows? Jersey cows are known for their higher calcium levels than other breeds. Milk from Jersey cows is also creamier due to the higher solids not fat content found in their milk. The solids not fat national average is 8.25 while our all jersey milk ranges from 9.48 to 9.92. These solids account for rich and flavorful milk, ice cream, butter, cream and cheese. And our freshness is noteworthy as well: milk taken from our cows at 2 a.m. is bottled and ready to go by Noon…only 10 hours later!

Top Notch Freshness and Quality
We believe our milk is of the highest quality and is the freshest milk you can get your hands on; if you want milk any fresher, you’ll have to buy your own cow! In fact, our milk is state approved for a 21-day expiration date. What does that mean? In short, it means our milk isn’t transported long distances and stored over the course of seven days or so prior to processing…Sparkman’s milk is processed in our plant right on the farm and delivered to our various retail outlets.

Seriously, the high quality means you are consuming milk with no artificial hormones from all-jersey cows…in other words, you are pouring yourself one of nature’s original health drinks. And taste, well, it’s worth repeating…we will be suprised if you don’t think our milk is the best you have ever tasted.

Our Milk Containers
You might be surprised to learn that our milk containers are made from corn starch. Once the composting temperature in the landfill reaches 140 degrees, the container will begin to dissolve. It’s just another reason to love Sparkman’s Cream Valley milk.

(*The FDA states they find no significant difference in milk from cows that are injected and not injected with artificial hormones; however, Sparkman’s Cream Valley chooses not to inject our all-jersey cows with artificial hormones.)

You can now buy the products at most Whole Foods locations throughout Atlanta or buy checking out the retail locations listings on their site.

Great stuff that will definitely continue to be a staple in my house.

I just found your blog via Google and am so excited. You seem to have the same taste (eclectic) as I do in eateries/markets… I love a good hole-in-the-wall as much as I love the “hottest table in town”, so to speak. I also enjoyed this post b/c I’m always looking for good butter. 😉 I use Plugra now, but am open to change; I hope Kroger carries this. Thank you and keep up the good work!
