El Rey de Taco: Atlanta

Many Atlantans are content to eat Nuevo Laredo and El Maguey but I just plain hate those joints. I have a hard time finding Mexican food that satisfies me in Atlanta. I always end up comparing it to the food I eat when I visit my family back in Mexico. I am always disappointed. There are either too many shortcuts taken or the flavor of the food has just been lost because the ingredients just taste different. I have, to my surprise, found one place that is satisfiying my belly lately. El Rey de Taco. It is nothing spectacular but they get the little things right and that is what good Mexican means to me. Great salsas. Handmade tortillas. Decent meats. Nice seafood cocktails. It does me right every time. I am also a fan of the parrilladas which are platters of sausage and meat smothered in spicy chiles and queso blanco. Great hangover food if you are in need. Check it out when you get a chance.

Have you tried La Oaxaquena Taqueria in Jonesboro? I saw the AJC review and have been there a couple of times. While I can’t say that I’d necessarily recognize authentic if I ate it, I really enjoyed what I had.

Unless that plate is HUGE, that is the littlest taco I have seen served. Are those what are being served in Mexico?

Have you tried El Nopal on Cobb Parkway in Marietta? It’s very un-pretentious and homey, but it’s got fantastic, fresh, home-style food for reasonable prices. I particularly crave their Chile Colorado.
