Collard Green Cafe: Atlanta

RESTAURANT REVIEW:

Saw a blurb about this place in the AJC and thought I would go check it out tonight. Small place with very little atmosphere but a lot of heart. The owner has been in the industry for a long time and used to have a smaller location before moving to this one a couple of years ago. We got there late in the evening and it seemed like most of his offerings were picked over. He fried us some fresh chicken and we both got peach cobbler (the AJC said apple but it is peach), mac and cheese and his collard greens. The sides were hit and miss. But, the chicken. Oh, that chicken…It was juicy and perfectly seasoned and crispy. It was worth the trip alone. The corn bread was something else too. The collards are made with pork and turkey and were something special even though I am normally not a big collard greens eater. The mac and cheese was so-so..I’d opt for another side next time. It is $8.95 for meat and three at dinner. It is priced according to the meat. You eat out of styrofoam with plastic and I suggest getting it to go because it is pretty bare bones in there. Worth a visit if you like a good piece of Southern fried chicken though.

I have just eaten at the Collard Green Cafe – boy, I wish I had read some of their reviews first. The food was just awful. I got a vegetable plate. The collard greens where such large pieces it needed to be cut, and very very sweet although the sign says “no can opener used” the green beans taste straight out of a can (no seasoning and over cooked), the corn bread was crumbly and the Mac and Cheese was dry and bland (is there any cheese used). I knew when it was being served it was not going to be the best, but I was game to try it. I heard from one person the food was no so good but, I wanted to give it a try. I thought maybe they where having a bad day. But, I do not think this is a bad day – the food is just awful – I want a refund 🙁

Good to know…I have not been since I did this post in 2006. The chicken was solid back then, but the sides were just so-so. Sounds like they have gone downhill.
