China Cooks: Roswell Road

posted on March 23, 2006 at 2:56 pm

I grabbed some lunch to go from here. It is across from Ly Noodle House (which I still have not tried) on Roswell road. I ordered the Singapore Rice Noodles and the Green Beans with ground pork and Chinese sausage. It was really underwhelming (I seem to be using that word often lately). The noodles were bland and something was off…I could not place it. I normally gobble these up whenever they are put in front of me. Not today. The green beans were crisp and well-cooked but the pork was way too salty. Even my BF, the human garbage can, would not eat them. Would be interested to see what anyone else who had eaten here thought. Don’t think I will be returning.

The last time I was at China Cooks we ordered Kung Pao Chicken. It came out and was definitely not chicken — it was bony and really weird, although the server insisted that it was chicken. We asked her to double-check and it turned out to be Kung Pao Frog! Apparently the Cantonese word for Frog is “field chicken” and this was an easy mistake to make.

This is one of the truely authentic and btw terrific chinese spots outside of Chambodia. If you are ordering Kung Pao you would probably be happier at one of the many $5 buffets around town. Try Thai-style hot and sour soup, any of the Hong Kong style pan fried noodle, beef chow fun, or any of the fresh seafood dishes. Sunday evening are very busy with a predominantly Asian and Jewish clientel (the sign of any good Chinese joint). Definitely worthy of another visit!
