RESTAURANT REVIEW:

I have been a longtime fan of Pho Dai Loi#2 on Buford Highway ever since my sister turned me on to it. But, I had never visited the original location in Forest Park. My friend requested pho for lunch last week so we drove down instead of going North to BuHi. It only took us about 15 minutes to get down there from downtown and it was packed when we arrived. He ordered the pho with beef tendon and I got the bun tom thit nuong, which is a bowl full of Vietnamese rice noodles, shredded lettuce, pork, shrimp, ground peanuts, fried shallots, and nuoc cham. Can life get any better? My bun was great and just as good, if not better, than the #2 location. My friend’s pho was very good too. The broth was deep, balanced, and completely soothing. There was a bit of an oil slick on the top of the soup, but it did not take away from the dish at all. The fresh lemonade was the right mix tart and sweet. This is definitely going in my rotation and I am happy to have it close by. Good to know I don’t have to go to Buford Highway if I want some ethnic food. I think I may go again this week after I check out the new Super H Mart in Riverdale.

RESTAURANT REVIEW:
For May’s issue of Atlanta INtown Paper, I went taco hunting. I ate a lot of tacos, but only a handful of places made my list. One place I had never been, simply due to proximity, was La Taqueria Oaxaquena. I decided that now was as good a time as any to bite the bullet and drive down to Jonesboro. The place was absolutely packed at lunch time. I grabbed a seat and hungrily looked around at all the fabulous looking dishes that my fellow-grubbers were digging into. I settled on a taco de cabeza (beef cheeks) and a tlayuda de bistec. I put my order in and grabbed some salsas and other accoutrements from their impressive bar next to the cash register.
My taco de bistec (basically a beef taco) was the first thing to show up. The fresh tortillas are gorgeous. A bit larger than the average tortilla, which made eating the taco much easier. The beef was very good especially after hitting it with their green salsa.
My tlayuda came next. I was floored by the sheer size of the thing and people were staring at this girl with a table full of food–something I am used to by now, but even this dish made me blush. The grilled tortilla was probably about 12 inches in diameter and topped with just about everything you could want like creamy strands of Oaxaca cheese, beans, perfect avocado slices, queso fresco, and well-seasoned meat. I did the best I could to get through the thing but ultimately made it through 1/4 of it. I brought the rest home to my boyfriend since he had not eaten lunch. I will bring a friend next time and order nothing else but the tlayuda. It was sooo good. Get there now and have one.

Verdict: A great spot with lots of delicious items sure to satisfy your craving for some well-done Mexican grub. Get there now. You can’t go wrong with whatever you order. Make sure you bring cash-they don’t take plastic.

RESTAURANT REVIEW:

I had been dying to try the food at Serenbe for quite some time. I decided to enlist a few friends to go with me for Sunday Supper this past weekend. We drove down (about 45 minutes for Downtown Atlanta) around 2 for a 3pm reservation. We reached out destination after a long stretch of country road and it was just as beautiful as I remembered from the Les Dames event. We had brought some Belgian beer along because they have no license. They don’t charge for corkage. The restaurant was small but quaint with a lovely view out onto the adjacent farm. They gave us some homemade cornbread and placed our beer in a ice bucket. There is only one menu and you don’t choose what you get. This Sunday it was fried chicken with sweet potatoes, beets, and collards. The chicken was perfectly cooked and crisp–worth the trip alone. I asked the chef how he prepared it and he said the key was a very hot cast iron skillet. The sides were good but the sweet potato puree was a bit overpowering. The dessert came and it was a meyer lemon and buttermilk pie with pineapple chunks. The crust tasted pre-made and I really could not taste the lemon. I am more of a savory person anyway. The relaxing environment, friends, and chicken were still a joy. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

It was such a warm event. It felt like one big family getting together for a reunion. I got to try some food from restaurants I had not been to or others that had just opened. Just one deliciously gorgeous day. You must make this event next year or at least pay a visit to the farm which has a restaurant and comfortable accommodations.
Here are some photos for your enjoyment:

I have to say it was average and kind of blah. Now, don’t come back at me with the English food is bland thing because it is just not true. My recent trips to London have yielded some very exciting and delicious meals. The fish was fresh but the batter was soooo under-seasoned. I put vinegar and salt on it but it couldn’t be helped. Good fries…needed salt too. I am sensitive to salt so I can only imagine what someone who likes it would think. The shepherd’s pie was well-prepared but under-seasoned as well. Shame that they seem to use good ingredients but are seriously lacking in the seasoning department.
RESTAURANT INFORMATION:
Address: 1705 Virginia Ave
Phone: (404) 763-9980
Map: Manchester Arms
Website: Manchester Arms
