The unmistakable boom of chef Hector Santiago’s voice calling out sandwich orders to his staff trickles out to the slanted sidewalk leading toward Poncey-Highland’s Super Pan Latino Sandwich Shop (1057 Blue Ridge Ave., 404-477-0379, www.superpanlatinosandwichshop.com). The sounds and smells emanating from the tiny open kitchen cause the same excited anticipation you feel when hearing your beloved mother or grandmother banging about in the kitchen. You know you are in for something good.

After a brief stint on “Top Chef,” Santiago quietly resumed his rounds at his famed pan-Latin restaurant, Pura Vida. Fans, who were enraged Santiago’s cooking wasn’t more appreciated on the popular Bravo show, waited in quiet anticipation to see what the talented chef would do next. Changes happened gradually at Pura Vida, with the addition of an insanely delicious and refined chicken burrito to the menu. Then, out of nowhere, Santiago appeared at the successful Atlanta Urban Picnic, organized by the Atlanta Street Food Coalition at the Sweet Auburn Curb Market, slinging his burritos to a mob of his enthusiastic supporters.

You know that feeling of desperation when you’ve waited too long to eat lunch? You’re starving and just want something good–and fast. Fast food isn’t an option and the thought of sitting down for lunch gives you a bad case of the lazies. I find myself in this situation at least one a week. And, when I do, I always end up at Lottafrutta or Alon’s for a veggie sandwich. Alon’s is made with loads of homemade pesto, roasted eggplant, roasted red peppers, tomato, and thick slices of fresh mozzarella on your choice of bread–I opted for wholegrain on this visit. The sandwich never lasts long in my lap. I eat half in my car and the other half when I get home.

So satisfying.

You can buy both the macarons and Sufganiyot in-store, but I like to pre-order and pick up the next day through Alon’s handy online ordering system.
I am a breadstick gal. Put a breadbasket in front of me with all sorts of baked goodies and I will always go for the breadsticks. Don’t even try to grab the last one–I will fight you for it. I assume my stick lust comes from the same place as my cracker fetish. But that is for me to figure out in therapy. And by the way, Alon’s makes some sick breadsticks/grissini with either sesame seed or poppy seeds. We always have them around because they are so damn good and a great way to throw some “bread” on the table when you don’t have time to hit the bakery.

No you are not misreading the title of this post. Belly General Store in Virginia Highlands is importing the bread from the famed boulangerie in Paris’ Latin Quarter. The loaves are fully cooked in the wood-fired ovens in Paris and arrive each Thursday at Belly. I ordered one for this Thursday. Bread is notoriously tempremental when it travels. So, I doubt this will be as good as the real thing I’ve enjoyed so many times in Paris. But it is still a great treat to have it locally. Lionel Poilâne passed away some years ago, but his daughter, Apollonia, has taken over the reigns of the Pain Poilâne empire. If you aren’t familiar with Poilâne’s legacy, check out this short video interview with Poilâne before he passed away.

The crust is impossibly crispy and flaky. The tomatoes are tangy and sweet even though they are not in season. The Ferry Building was my favorite. I have gotten out of that routine since moving here. I did get to Morningside yesterday morning and found what I needed despite the small amount of vendors. I bought a bunch of veggies and a dozen duck eggs (those eggs are sooo good). If you have never been…go. You can pick some bread up at Alon’s afterward.
