The Wine Shoe opened in Castleberry Hill (my hood) a while back. Moon calls it a “weird store,” but I think it’s a convenient addition to the neighborhood when you don’t feel like trekking to another store. Just don’t go expecting to discover any obscure finds.

What they do have is chilled bottles of sparkling on hand if you are in a pinch and they offer loads of wine classes. There is also a super cute–and friendly–puppy that hangs out in the store every day. Check it out next time you are in the area and let me know what you think.

The morning after I moved to Castleberry Hill, I was jonesing for coffee. Unfortunately, my coffee maker was buried somewhere in a mass of boxes and I was too cranky to hunt for it. I set out on foot to find a coffee spot and came up empty. As the years went by, a few coffee places came (and a few went). But the ‘hood didn’t have a proper place to get a hot breakfast until Johnny Cakes (323 Walker St., 678-705-9759) opened in March.

The owners have made good use of a tri-level space that sits next to a tattoo parlor. The kitchen is located on the lowest floor, the dining room at street level, and the upper mezzanine is converted into a lounge where telecommuting customers can take advantage of the free Wi-Fi. One of the restaurant’s best features is a wall papered in a delightfully trippy assortment of posters, ranging from old-fashioned French bistro to SpongeBob to Reefer Madness. Click here to read the rest…

Agave: Is it any wonder that a restaurant named for the plant from which tequila is made serves excellent margaritas? Agave’s bar stocks an impressive list of obscure tequila brands you can enjoy in your margarita for an upcharge. The restaurant also offers a short menu of house-designed margaritas. Your best bets are the Agave Don Eduardo Anejo — Don Eduardo Anejo, Triple Sec, fresh lime and sour mix on the rocks — or the Corzo Perfecto, a mix of Corzo Super Premium Reposado, fresh lime juice and agave nectar (a syrup resembling honey in texture). 242 Boulevard. 404-588-0006. www.agaverestaurant.com.

Nos Mas Cantina: This Castleberry Hill cantina isn’t the most authentic Mexican eatery, but the wildly colorful décor and the prospect of sipping margaritas on the fan-clad porch are reason enough to visit. If taste and quality are what you’re after, order the Dulce — Partida Blanco Tequila, fresh lime juice and agave nectar. Click here to read the rest…

What an adorable little place! I had some grilled merguez sausages over Puy lentils and a delightful eggplant caviar served with crostini. The food was good, not great. But I loved the atmosphere and the sangria was perfect. I can’t say I would go back for dinner, but can imagine this becoming a regular hangout for wine and tiny noshes.

The food–pancakes, eggs and hash browns–was decent, but nothing spectacular. Everything was missing salt and they were out of Johnny Cakes, which I found a touch odd. The best thing about the place–aside from the decor–is the fresh juice bar. I ordered a pineapple and apple juice, which was deliciously tangy and frothy. But the price was a little steep at around $6 for a glass of juice. Not a destination, but good if you are feeling peckish and happen to be in the hood.

Abbatoir opened last night and we paid them a visit to see what chefs Anne Quatrano and Clifford Harrison had done with space and menu. Seems the excitement wasn’t contained to my party as I saw many industry folks there. The menu is very meat-centric as promised. Since it was opening night, it’s unfair to critique the place yet. But I have to say we had a lovely meal and our bill–that included 10 dishes, 2 bottles of wine, a few beers and some cocktails–only rang in around $189, which was a steal considering how much our party ate.

A lot of thought went into everything from the oversized napkins to stunningly simple yet eclectic decor. I have a very good feeling about this place. Stay tuned for my full review in a month or so.

Moonie recently asked me to his Missus and I accepted after a chain of hilarious proposal events that couldn’t have been more perfect when it comes to this pair of fools. So, I am taking a deep breath and diving into the dark and scary waters of wedding planning. I just hope I don’t mutate from an “anti-bride” into a bridezilla before it’s all over. Pray for me and my Moon.

As a child of Mexican immigrants living in the States, I learned about the importance of food — especially sweets — during our visits with family in Mexico. My grandmother always insisted on taking us to Sanborns — the Denny’s of Mexico — for a breakfast of pan tostado con azúcar (butter and sugar-coated toast) and chocolate caliente. My grandfather would take me to panaderias and let me hold the tray as he grabbed various pastries from the display case with long aluminum tongs. And my father would get as giddy as a chubby schoolboy as he sampled the cloyingly sweet homemade candies of his youth.

So, you can imagine my excitement when I heard that the folks at No Mas had opened ADios Café (180 Walker St., 404-574-5678, www.nomascantina.com) in a warm space attached to the equally colorful and ornate cantina and furniture store. I was told the name does not mean goodbye, but “of the gods” — a tribute to the Mayans, who discovered chocolate in 600 A.D. and believed it was a gift from the gods. A cute idea even if the name actually translates “to god.” Click here to read the rest…

When I moved to Castleberry Hill, No Mas! Cantina was one of the first places I went to eat. Even though I am Mexican, I do like a little slutty Texican food now and again. I was pretty disappointed with the food and wrote the vibrantly decorated restaurant off as a big FAIL. And I didn’t go back until this past Saturday when Moon and I were craving margaritas after this delicious gut-bomb at FLIP (tempura asparagus makes me happy).

So, we went over to give it another shot. The place was packed as it always is when I drive by. We took our seats on the outdoor patio and perused the drink menu. Most of the tables had towering glass pitchers filled with the house margarita. They looked awesome, but we weren’t keen on having Cuervo–the secret to managing a lot of tequila is drinking the right tequila. So, we ordered a couple of “Dulce” margaritas made with Partida Blanco Tequila, fresh lime juice and agave nectar (I recommend asking for a touch more fresh lime juice if you are sensitive to sweet flavors like myself). Each drink comes in a cute glass with a wooden bracelet attached to the bottom.

After chiding Moon for taking the bracelet off of his glass and wearing it, our waitress told us they were, in fact, ours to keep (my bad, Moonie) so you can “keep track” of how many drinks you’ve had. Cute idea.

My first…

My second…and last one I will show you lest you think me a lush.

As much as I didn’t like the food in the past, I can say this was an absolutely wonderful way to spend a weekend day with my favorite boy. And it is within walking distance from our house. You cannot beat that!

On our way out, we spotted a sign saying “Adios Cafe.” We naturally investigated.

Turns out the restaurant has opened a coffee and chocolate Bar that is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. They have loads of cool drinks like coffee laced with Arbol chilis and hot cocoas with cinnamon. They also make all their own pastries (churros, anyone?), truffles and empanadas (both savory and sweet). Such a great addition to the neighborhood. I will let you know how it is soon in an upcoming “Cheap Eats” column for Creative Loafing.
