The service at Madras Woodlands (2201 Lawrenceville Highway, 404-248-9333) is achingly slow. My friend and I, who have both traveled to India, joke that waiting for our order feels just like being there. Bursts of people — mostly office workers on their lunch breaks — enter the restaurant and sit down, only to jump back up in an instant to hit the expansive buffet, a better option than ordering from the menu if you’re pressed for time. On this visit (and my next) I forgo the buffet because the menu, which reads like a greatest hits of all Indian sub-cuisines, is just too enticing to pass up. There is something to be said for a place where everyone, carnivore and vegetarian alike, can find something they want.

There’s a large selection of chaat (Indian snack food) items to choose from and all of the dishes I’ve sampled have been well-executed. A towering bowl of bhel puri (puffed rice with chopped tomatoes, raw yellow onion and cilantro) is dressed with a tangy tamarind dressing that slightly wilts each football-shaped morsel without making it soggy. The brightness of the sauce and chopped raw produce prevent the dish from feeling too heavy. Medhu vadal look like doughnuts, but these deceptive circles of fried fun aren’t anything like their sweet cousins. They’re savory, lentil-based crunch monsters, but still airy and almost creamy on the inside. The dish comes with a light lentil stew for dipping that’s reminiscent of your mom’s vegetable soup.

I’ve been lucky enough to eat Asha’s cooking on a few occasions, but have always lamented the fact that her food wasn’t more widely available to the public. Asha recently debuted her Spice Route Supper Club, a series of multi-course Indian meals.

Asha’s husband, Bobby, acted as the host while Asha cooked away in the kitchen.

This is my personalized menu (everyone got one) from the first supper club with a focus on Kerala, Asha’s home.

All of the courses were paired with drinks. The first course came with spiced Darjeeling tea.

Beef and potato croquettes with green papaya pickle. I could have eaten twelve of these. They tasted like Kibbeh.

Kerala chicken stew served with a wedge of vattayappam (thick savory coconut bread with an angel food consistency). This course was served with a Chenin Blanc.

Fish curry, which was also served with a tiny glass of beer.

The famous Souper Jenny Levinson happened to be one of the guests that magical night. She found her way to the kitchen to help Asha plate (of course).

Beef with kappa (taro root) cake, which was also served with a wine whose name escapes me.

The finishing touch: a little warm chai to go with these beautiful coconut crepes.

The next Spice Route Supper Club is a traditional sadya, the banquet that is a staple of Kerala celebrations. Sitting on the floor on mats, each person receives a banana leaf on which the 21 dishes are served. Asha will guide you through the history and ritual of the meal. Some of the dishes you can expect include:
—Avial, the classic coconut-enriched Kerala vegetable curry
—Sambar, the classic tamarind-based vegetable stew of South India
—Ginger curry
—Beet pachadi, a silky yogurt-based curry
—Thoren, vegetables stir-fried with grated coconut nut, mustard seeds and curry leaves
The dinner is on October 30th at 7pm and space is very limited. The cost is a minimum donation of $65. You can get more information or contact Asha to secure your seat through her website.

I pride myself on being the type of home cook who can make any recipe you put in front of me. However, Indian cuisine has proven to be my biggest challenge. It’s a beautiful cuisine, but incredibly difficult to master.

As I build my knowledge of the flavor profiles needed to really cook the dishes well, one store has become my favorite place to shop for ingredients: Cherians International Groceries. Cherians offers a dazzling assortment of every product imaginable from the Indian subcontinent.

“Not today,” says the gruff older Indian woman behind the counter at Kusum Foods (2899 N. Decatur Road, Decatur, 404-296-3338). That’s the third time she’s said that after I’ve asked for a specific dish. I’m frustrated and a little embarrassed, so I try to joke about the lack of availability, but her stoicism doesn’t break. I finally select a few dishes with success and escape to my booth in the oddly bright blue room. The woman shouts that one of my orders is ready and I timidly approach the counter to whisk away my chaat, a style of street snack originating in India’s Gujarat state – the birthplace of Kusum’s cuisine. Gujarati cuisine is primarily vegetarian with an emphasis on seasonality.

Many of the chaat use similar ingredients such as chickpeas, potatoes, chutney, yogurt and onion. However, the dishes’ appeal is that they satisfy different textural cravings through different preparations. Bhel puri – a mound of puffed rice topped with mixed diced onions, potatoes, a spicy and sweet chutney, and crispy chickpea flour noodles – is at once sweet, savory, crunchy, tangy and earthy. It is best when eaten quickly since the chutney can make the rice soggy. Paani puri – one of the most well known styles of puri – arrives on a plate with a cup of sweet water.

Kitchen confession: I’m a hopeless failure when it comes to making Indian food at home. Really. I’ve tried hundreds of recipes, but the results are lackluster and sometimes inedible.

I’m back to my old gluttonous habits after a much-needed break to pay penance for the ten pounds I gained on the honeyMoon. I’ve been eating out a lot and have 20 restaurants in the blog pipeline–not including the misses you wouldn’t miss. In an effort to lessen the burden of my self-imposed blog guilt, I’ve compiled a quick and dirty round-up of the best, worst and weirdest from the past month starting with our first meal of the year: brunch at Cafe di Sol. This was my third visit and I gotta say this place doesn’t get enough love. Good breakfast and brunch places are already hard to find. You know you settle. Admit it.

Cafe di Sol has all the right parts in place. The restaurant–located in the old Diem space–is inviting, there’s a killer covered patio, the bartender makes a wickedly spicy bloody mary, and the food, while not perfect, has a little something for every craving.

My favorite dish thus far: The chicken biscuits with mushroom gravy. Flaky biscuits, crunchy fried chicken without a trace of oil, a lacquer of gravy and two picture perfect eggs. Add a bloody and you have one happy Sunday.

Moon’s birthday was a few days later and we have two celebrations: a dinner with friends and a family gathering. Royal China is not my favorite Chinese restaurant in Atlanta, but it’s a great spot for a large gathering and the restaurant only charges a tiny flat corkage fee; our table was packed with beer and wine. We ordered 30 dishes including the Peking duck (see below).

The two-course presentation was a lot of fun for everyone and we liked it so much we ordered two. Great meal with friends and the cupcakes from Little Cake Bakery were a perfect sweet note to end the night.

For Moon’s actual birthday dinner, he chose Ormsby’s since it was a weeknight and we wanted something casual and fun. The hostess offered us the choice of dining upstairs or downstairs. We chose downstairs because that is where all the fun games are–this indoor bocce ball included.

Our extremely friendly waitress took our order and everyone scattered. Junior camped out in the little cubby with video games, Moon made love to the jukebox and I examined the impressive beer menu. It was a nice way to spend a rainy Monday birthday night until we were approached by a manager and told kids are not allowed downstairs for their safety. Apparently the hostess wasn’t told. We offered to move upstairs twice, but he told us to stay downstairs. It was a birthday buzz-kill, but we made up for the awkward experience with ethereal chocolate mousse birthday cake from Alon’s Bakery when we got home. Around the time of our meal, the policy re: kids was undecided, but Ormsby’s settled on the following per their PR representative, Melissa Libby: No one under 21 is allowed downstairs after 6pm and no one under 21 is allowed in the restaurant/bar after 8pm. I personally feel they are losing out on a lot of potential revenue from families who live nearby, but a policy is a policy. What do you think?

We went to Sauced, Ria Pell’s new spot, where I ate the weirdest food I’ve had in a long while. I am floored with the retro face-lift they gave the previously barren space. It’s warm, the kind of place that you just want to hang out in.

The food is another story. The comfort food concept is a great idea, but the execution is seriously lacking; we experienced over-salted food, a soggy beef wellington that had huge chunks of fat, cloying cocktails and sloppy plating. I hope Ria smooths the bumps out because the bones are certainly there. Take heed and give it a little time.

We unfortunately left feeling unsatisfied. So, we did the thing food obsessed people do and went down the street to Shaun’s for a second meal.

The thing I like about Shaun’s is that I like it a little more each time I go. The place evolves and I have to admit I may have sold this place short in the past. If you order well, you’ll end up with new creations like this:

The Carolina Gold and Chicken soup. If you like congee, you’ll go wild for this soup. It is full of rich chicken stock, buttery Carolina Gold rice (I heart this rice), an intense drizzle of sweetish soy reduction (?), chives, a julienne of fresh ginger, and crushed peanuts; a totally craveable dish I will return for as long as it is on the menu.

I went hunting for new Indian some days later and went to check out Tava Grill, an Indian/Pakistani restaurant stall located in the sparkling new Cherians;

All of the food is made to order and the menu is full of snack type food like the bun kabab above and more intensive dishes like nihari. Sadly, the overall flavor of the food was average and saturated with food coloring.

Not a gem of a find.

We went to check out Kusum Foods, a place John Kessler found and wrote about, since we were in the area.

The place is sterile, but the food has all the color your heart desires. The thali (above) was decent; I really liked those puffy crunchy things in the bottom right corner of the picture. But the real draw for me here is the chaat (Indian snack/street food). I adored the sev puri: a sphere of puffed rice that’s cracked and filled with soft potatoes, yogurt and tamarind. I can’t wait to get back and try more–especially the sweets.

I couldn’t resist picking up a slice of yellow cake with chocolate frosting from Southern Sweets.

Amidst the exploring, I frequented my old standbys like this filling post-workout tofu sandwich at Dynamic Dish. Tip: check his Twitter feed for the daily menu.

The polar opposite of Dynamic Dish: the gut-bomb specials, like this Frito Pie with brisket chili, at Fox Brothers Barbecue.

Um, yum. Points for serving it in the bag.

And a warming cup of Kristen Hard’s spicy (and pricey) Aztec hot chocolate at Cacao, her cute-as-a-button Inman Park boutique.

One of my favorite parts of the month was a macaron making workshop organized by Tami of Running with Tweezers and Shameeka of The Broke Socialite as part of Sugar Coma, a tour off all things sweet in Atlanta. Helen McSweeney, the force behind Tartelette, taught a group of us how to make basic macarons on Sunday afternoon. I am proud to say my less than stellar baking skills actually made something edible.

I like to use fancy camera tricks to hide my mistakes.

I’m still embroiled in my love affair with Miller Union. The food is made with good ingredients and care. The space is so welcoming and feels like you’re visiting a friend. What else could you want from a New American restaurant? My favorites, so far, are the farm egg in celery cream with grilled country bread and the rabbit over grits. Miller Union is now hosting family-style “Harvest Dinners” every Tuesday. I am dying to go to one. Get more information here.

There were, of course, more meals throughout the month, but I am going to do bigger posts of those. Stay tuned for my review of Tuk Tuk and more.

You can frequent a restaurant for years and never know its story. Take Udipi Café (1707 Church St., Decatur, 404-325-1933, www.udipicafeusa.com), for instance. I’d always thought the restaurant was some corporate chain until revisiting to explore the new location. But I’m getting ahead of myself. …

Back in April, I received a handful of frantic e-mails from readers reporting that the restaurant had closed. But it hadn’t. The owner, Suresh Sheregar, relocated two minutes away to resolve the nightmarish parking situation that had deterred so many would-be customers for years. Now the restaurant has plenty of parking and a fresh look. But that’s not the only news. Udipi opened a second Atlanta location in Duluth about a year ago, which is smaller, but a welcome option for OTP folks craving vegetarian South Indian fare. December brought Moksha, an upscale non-vegetarian option in Roswell featuring a comprehensive menu of specialties from every state in the sub-continent. And Bay Leaves — a buffet-only spot with both vegetarian and meat dishes — will open in the old Decatur Udipi space sometime next month.

As impressive as Sheregar’s span of Atlanta’s restaurants is, the four establishments are just a small part of the big picture. After speaking with Sheregar, I learned the restaurant is not a traditional chain, but a complete family affair. Sheregar started working in the restaurants of Mumbai to support himself after his father passed away when he was a teenager. Click here to read the rest…

I’d seen this restaurant a while back when we drove up to check out the food court in the Hong Kong Supermarket. But I wasn’t enticed to return until I got a tip from a reader, Anne Wittle, claiming it reminded her of her time in Thailand. Anne wrote me the following after I asked her what dishes she recommended:

Everything we’ve had was good but their noodles are great. Where else in Atlanta do you find Yen Ta Fo or Boat Noodles? The Khao Pad Kai (fried rice with chicken) is great although it could use just a bit more tomato to be like my favorite vendor in NakornPathom. The pad ka pow kai (chicken with basil) and pad khing kai (ginger chicken) were just like my host Mom used to cook. All of the curries were spot on. The potak is perfect and I can’t wait to go back to try the Tum Yum and the Pad Thai. The owner is super nice and came out to chat with us about real Thai food. He says he can make other dishes too with a bit of notice. Also, there were a few things they had that were not on the menu so ask if there’s anything special that day – you never know what you’ll get.

Moon is a Thai food fanatic. His brother lives in Los Angeles and he always returns moaning about how Atlanta has no good Thai food. I always say Nan is a great spot, but it is on the pricey side. So, I am always looking for new spots to appease his cravings. Nothing ever does the trick. But our first visit to KoKai Thai Bistro had Moon exclaiming he’d finally found something to scratch his Thai itch.

The restaurant advertises that is serves authentic Thai street food. The space is very modern with loads of light and a cutesy counter designed to look like a fake street cart. There are abstract pictures of chickens and eggs everywhere–I assume “KoKai” must mean chicken in Thai.

Lighting fixtures and rafters

The menu is all high-gloss pictures of basic Thai dishes–nothing out of the ordinary. We ordered a handful of dishes to test the waters. First up: drinks.

Tea is such an integral part of most Asian cultures. Yet, diners are normally given basic black tea. However, KoKai offers at least one premium tea selection: The rose tea. It’s served in these beautiful glass tea pots where you can watch the blooms expand and fill the middle chamber as it steeps. As lovely on the tongue as it was on the eyes.

Thai iced tea: Moon’s brother ordered this and I just had to take a photo. Pure sex in a glass.

Larb kai: Our first dish and our table’s favorite of the meal. Crumbled pieces of chicken mixed with red onion in a slightly spicy and tangy sauce with that underlying pungency Thai food is known for. You wrap the chicken in the little cabbage cups and eat it taco-style. Add a little chile paste or chopped chiles and you have a textural smack-down full of intense flavors.

Condiments: an assortment of blazing Thai accoutrements. The tiny green chiles are mixed with lime and fish sauce. The larger green chiles (in the back) are the spiciest.

Nua Toob: The restaurant calls this “beef jerky.” The meat was chewy, but super flavorful. And the tangy and smoky red sauce was perfect against the fat of the meat. We all loved it. There is also a pork version.

Pad Thai: Yes, this dish is incredibly ubiquitous and boring for some. But this is a litmus dish for me that I really love when it is done well. We chose shrimp and fried tofu. The noodles were lightly coated in sauce and chile powder. The sauce was thankfully not cloying, but there could have been a touch more sauce. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and the pillowy tofu was lightly crisped on the outside. A good dish, but not the best I have had. However, I would order it again.

Basil fried rice: We ordered this “Thai hot,” but it was pretty tame. No matter. It was gorgeous. The basil added a slight sweetness to the crisped rice and tender pieces of chicken. I mixed in a little of the pickled green chiles and it was perfect. It was gone in a flash.

Red red chicken curry: Moon loves his Thai curries. He said the flavor profile of this curry–which we ordered in lieu of the beef curry they were out of–was spot on. However, he said he would have liked it to be a bit thicker and more intensely spicy. I thought it was pretty good, but I am not a huge fan of Thai curries. I prefer denser types like Indian or Japanese.

Verdict: An incredibly cute and tasty Thai place that is definitely worth a visit. In the true spirit of street food, our orders came out in a flash. Our only complaint as a group was that they could have made things much spicier. But the condiments on the table remedied any lack of heat. We all agreed we’d return because we enjoyed our meal and there is still so much to explore.

I visited Tandoor Restaurant (279 Powers Ferry Road, Marietta, 678-560-2038) three times before I actually had a meal there. Two visits were on Mondays when they are closed — the signage was slightly obscured — and the other was a quick stop to grab a menu after feasting elsewhere. The seductive aroma of charred bread, dreamy spices and seared meat wafting from the kitchen prompted me to plan my immediate return.

The restaurant sits in between a Halal butcher and a Dominican salon in a random mini-strip mall. The decor is as spartan as an institutional cafeteria: no art, tablecloths, linen napkins or metal flatware. But the complex and soulful food makes up for the missing ambiance. Owner Shamshad Karim lived in Behar, India, before his family moved to Karachi, Pakistan, when he was a child, so the menu showcases dishes from both countries. Click here to read the rest…
