Atlanta INtown Paper: Timeless Treats

posted on August 29, 2007 at 12:35 pm

Cupcakes have exploded around Atlanta in the past couple of months as you have probably gathered from the pieces in local papers–like the AJC and Creative Loafing–and the number of cupcake-centric shops opening around Atlanta. In the September issue of Atlanta INtown Paper, which is a on stands now, I showcase some spots with stellar cupcakes to satisfy anyone’s craving.

Why did you not review the places that essentially brought the cupcake to modern Atlanta, such as Belly General Store and Star Provisions? I’ve also been very pleased with the offerings at Sawicki’s. Was this a paid advertising-supported article? It just seems to omit more than it contains.

No, this was not a paid article–none of them are (thank god I have a good editor in that regard). When it came to choosing the places in my article, I went strictly on flavor–isn’t that the point of finding the good ones?

In reference to the places you named, this was why I could not recommend them to my readers:

Belly: I find them to be dry although the frosting is very good.

Star Provisions: Again, dry cake and the frosting is atrocious. I find most of their baked goods to be equally bad.

Sawicki’s did not do it for me in all honesty–I adore her shop.

    Hope this answers your question.

Thank you very much for your kind response. I apologize for the implication of impropriety. I’ll admit that I’ve been out of a cupcake mode and haven’t purchased them from either Belly or Star lately. I used to be quite addicted to certain items at Star (particularly the brownies) but agree that the quality overall isn’t what it used to be (along with the portions, although the prices in some cases have doubled). It makes sense that the cupcakes there would also now disappoint.

Maybe my cupcake experience at Sawicki’s was a fluke (I’m generally not fond of her baked goods either), but I bought some half-price (read: old) ones recently and my coworkers (and I) were gaga for them. They were remarkably moist.

The audio on your Alexa flash briefing this morning is mixed up. Sounds like audio of someone driving. There is no dialogue.
