Alfredo Gran San Bernardo: Milan

RESTAURANT REVIEW:
I didn’t want to go to any nouveau Italian places when in Milan. I wanted purely traditional fare in a good atmosphere. I heard this place was the quintessential milanese restaurant so I had to check it out. After a 30 minute cab ride from my hotel we arrived at the restaurant and it was empty. There was only 3 other people aside from my party. My heart sank. That was until our waiter sat us at the table and then promptly brought out a Prosecco and breaded veal cheek meatballs. I was excited again. The thing to have here is the risotto or veal milanese. The have an amazing selection of grappas and an impressive wine list. The waiter was my favorite part. He knew everything about the food, its origin, and wine. He brought out home-made sugar cookies and then beer-battered apples with a zabaione along with our espresso. The flavor was incomprehensibly good. The evening just left me floating with a smile on my face. Isn’t that what a good meal is supposed to do?
